For this issue, we interviewed young employees who are expanding their working possibilities under the three themes of "male employees taking childcare leave," "engineering careers from no experience," and "moving to Kumamoto.
He took childcare leave as a father, cherishing the time with his child while also giving his all to his work.
First, please tell us about your current work.
I am the leader of the customer support team in charge of the credit/debt management area of the accounting system.
In addition to customer support, I also work as a follow-up and consultant for team members.Did taking maternity leave change your approach to work or your relationship with your team?
I have become more time conscious. I used to try to finish all the tasks for the day even if I had to work overtime, but now I have time to pick up my children. Therefore, I have started to prioritize tasks and proceed more efficiently than ever before. I was able to enter childcare leave without any particular trouble because I had been gradually taking over the job for about six months prior to entering childcare leave. In fact, I think that I was able to entrust my duties to my team members more naturally than before because I had a sense of trust that they could take care of things without me.
What was the background behind your decision to take maternity leave?
The main reason for this was that I did not want to unbalance the workload between husband and wife.
I didn't want the burden of feeding the child at night, putting him to bed, etc. I wanted to be able to take care of the child together, and most importantly, I wanted to be able to see the child grow up closely. How did your supervisor and team react to your decision to take the leave?
They were very positive about it.
The moment I talked to my boss about it, he said, "Great. My team members warmly sent me off, saying, "I know childcare is hard work, but I wish you all the best. After returning from childcare leave, were there any difficulties or challenges in balancing work and childcare?
When I am called out of the daycare center for a sudden fever, I sometimes feel impatient, thinking, "What am I going to do about this job? However, in such cases, I immediately share the situation with my team and ask them to support my work. Of course, we support each other in a mutual spirit by following up with other members later.
Did your childcare leave have any impact on your personal growth or work?
Yes, there is. Children are not able to communicate their needs well in words, so we need to observe and think about what they want. I feel that this sense is being applied to my work as well, and I feel that I am now able to see the essence of customers' problems and respond to irregular situations more flexibly than ever before.
Finally, do you have a message for those who are thinking about working and raising children?
I believe that maternity leave is not something that "stops your career," but is a valuable opportunity to gain "experiences that you can only have in your life. I was able to take this leave with peace of mind because our company has not only a system but also a culture that actually supports me. Even after maternity leave, I feel that I can build a positive career while balancing work with child rearing because the company is an environment where I am entrusted with work with discretion.
From no experience to becoming an engineer, he has seen what lies ahead. Looking back on his growth with a training instructor.
You worked in a different industry in your previous job. Why did you decide to become an engineer?
In my previous job as a university administrative staff member, I was involved in job placement assistance and teaching duties, and I was involved in improving operations and maintaining manuals, but there were many times when I felt that things could be done more efficiently. I felt that "things could be done better with the power of IT," and I wanted to be a part of those improvements eventually, which is when I decided to become an engineer.
Why did you choose Works Applications out of all the companies?
I was attracted to the fact that the company clearly stated that "no experience necessary" was welcome. I felt that it was an environment where I could have a chance to challenge myself. Of course, I was worried about the technical aspects, but I thought, "If I don't take on this challenge now, I will regret it," and decided to take the plunge.
When you actually joined the company, were there any gaps in the working style or environment?
As for teleworking, there was a gap in a good way. If I wanted to ask a question, I could do so immediately via chat or online meetings, and there were regular 1-on-1 sessions, so I was able to resolve my concerns frequently as I went along. On the other hand, since most of the work is done in writing, it is necessary to be able to organize information and ask questions in a way that is easy to convey to the other person. I found this difficult at first, but I gradually became accustomed to it.
Were there any situations during the training that you struggled with?
While working on a practical assignment using the company's accounting system, I struggled because I could not correctly specify the initial settings and conditions for outputting reports, which resulted in a large number of errors and did not allow me to proceed as planned. At first, due to my inexperience, I did not know where to look on the screen or what to check when an error occurred, and all I could do was vaguely say, "I don't know. However, as the training progressed, I was able to organize my trial-and-error process and ask questions such as, "I have checked so far, but I don't understand the meaning of this setting.
How did the training instructors see M.S. during the training?
I was impressed by their very steady and careful approach to each assignment. I could see their ingenuity in the way they asked questions, and I could sense their steady growth as they were able to make their own judgments about "what to prioritize and how far to go" within the limited time available.
The training at Works Applications is breakthrough, but what kind of skills are required?
I believe that there are three major factors: first, the ability to take the first step and say, "Let's try first," and second, the ability to solve problems. It is important to derive answers through trial and error in one's own way. The third is the ability to enjoy learning. Learning new things is inherently enjoyable. I believe that those who can maintain this feeling will be able to grow in any situation.
What was your impression when you were first assigned to the field division? Were you able to immediately apply the content of the training?
It has been about six months since I started working in the field, and there was still a lot I didn't understand at first. I learned the basics of IT and product knowledge through training, but there were many terms and technologies unique to development in the field, so I had to catch up one by one by researching, asking questions in chat rooms, and having my seniors take time for online meetings.
What did you feel you "grew up" in the first six months after joining the company, and what are your goals for the future?
Currently, I am in charge of the product quality assurance team, which is responsible for finding and analyzing the root causes of issues and formulating measures to prevent recurrence. This process requires the ability to organize problems, think in a logical manner, and take action. Through these experiences, I feel that I have greatly improved my ability to grasp things logically and my ability to make arrangements. In the future, I aim to become an engineer who can contribute to business improvement and problem solving through the power of data. First of all, I would like to make the most of the environment I have now, and while deepening my ability to analyze product quality data and my understanding of business operations, I would like to step up from both a practical and learning perspective.
Finally, do you have a message for those who are taking on the challenge of joining an IT company with no experience?
I think there are many people who feel uneasy about taking on a new challenge with no experience.
We, the instructors, will do our best to support those who jumped into the program with the desire to grow. This is an environment where you can grow as much as you put in the effort.*Telework is possible during training, but you will be required to come to the office for testing.
A UIJ-turn and finding a way to work that is unique to you. Even if you are in a rural area, you can do work that contributes to customers all over Japan.
Please tell us why you moved to Kumamoto.
My husband is from Kumamoto and we moved there in 2021 when we got married. I am from Shizuoka and have lived in Tokyo for a long time, but I am not particular about where I live, so it was a natural decision.
I am from Osaka and have lived in Kansai all my life, and moved to Kumamoto in 2023 when my partner was transferred. I was a bit hesitant at first, but now I really like living in Kumamoto.
Did you have any concerns about changing jobs in Kumamoto?
To be honest, I was very anxious (laughs).
It was especially difficult to find a job in the IT industry. There were few jobs that matched my criteria, most were for experienced workers, and the salaries were modest compared to Tokyo. I felt that a similar career might not be possible anymore. Is there any difference between working at Works Applications in Kumamoto and Tokyo/Osaka?
Since I can telework, the working style itself is no different from that in the city.
Our clients are also major companies from all over the country. My daily life is quiet and rich in nature, but at work I am working on projects with members of the Tokyo headquarters. That gap is rather interesting. How do you feel about evaluations, growth opportunities, and the company culture?
In my previous job, I often felt that the evaluation system was vague, but at our company, "what is expected of me" is clear, and this is communicated to me through regular interviews.
This is a good indicator of my growth and motivates me.How do you feel about the ease of working and living in Kumamoto and how it affects your work?
The commute to work is only about 30 minutes, and housing costs are low, which makes life more comfortable.
In my current department, I am in charge of education and am working on training design and development, and I am able to concentrate on the work of nurturing people in the calm environment of Kumamoto.Because the last bus leaves early in my area, I have naturally developed an awareness of finishing my work within a limited time. I feel that I have developed the habit of being aware of my work priorities and proceeding efficiently. Also, in Osaka, it was sometimes difficult to think calmly because of the speed of the surroundings, but in Kumamoto, it is quieter and I can face my work with a relaxed mind.
Do you have a message for those who are not sure about working in Kumamoto?
I think that Kumamoto is an environment where I can fully focus on my work and growth because I have a relaxed lifestyle. I am now able to focus on my role of nurturing others, and I feel that I am steadily growing at my own pace. Also, there are positions that I can take on with no experience and a system that allows me to consult easily even when teleworking, so I can aim to grow at the same level as in other parts of the country while still being in Kumamoto. I recommend this company to those who want to work for a long time in a calm place.
