A direct interview with a HUE consultant! What is the appeal and value of the job?

For the smiles of our clients beyond the solution of their problems

Profile

Consultant

A.T. / T.N. / M.M.

Release Date : 2023/03/20

For this issue, we interviewed three consultants in the Customer Support Department under the theme of "consultants who are active in the Works Applications Group.

Responsible for dealing with a variety of customers. Facing many challenges.

Please tell us about your daily work and what you are trying to do.

First of all, as a premise, our "consultants" are divided into two main types depending on the phase they are in charge of. The first is the "implementation consultant" who accompanies the client through the "implementation phase" from the time the contract is signed to the time the client actually begins using the system. The second is the "maintenance consultant" who provides follow-up services after the implementation is completed and the system is in use.
Since there are a number of functions and applications within a system, implementation consultants have different areas of expertise in each of these areas.

As an implementation consultant, I am in charge of implementing a fixed asset management system for the ERP package software "HUE. Currently, I am in charge of five projects, and as a project manager, I am responsible for meeting with clients and managing the progress of team tasks.

The issues that each client wants to solve through system implementation are different, so I listen to the client's requests in as much detail as possible and discuss them with them to determine the necessary functions and operation methods for each company.

In the past, many customers were concerned about whether or not the introduction of a new system would interfere with their future business operations. Our role as consultants is to take the lead in dispelling such concerns.

It usually takes more than 6 months to complete a project, which is a long period of time, but it is very rewarding to see our clients happy after the implementation.

Please click here to see a case study of a fixed asset management system.

As an implementation consultant, I am also in charge of implementing an expense reimbursement system for the ERP package software "HUE. My responsibilities are almost the same as what T.N. talked about, so I would like to talk about what I am trying to do in my job.

What I am conscious of at work is to communicate closely with various people, both inside and outside the company.
When I interview clients about their needs, it is not meaningful to just listen to what they say, so I ask "why" questions over and over again in order to dig deeper and find out the essential issues.

Also, consultants work in collaboration with sales and development staff within the company, so I try to actively communicate with them within the company. I basically telecommute, so I don't have many opportunities to come to the office, but when I do go to the office, I often go out to dinner with someone (laughs).

As a maintenance consultant, I mainly provide after-sales follow-up services to customers who have implemented our ERP package software, HUE. I hold regular meetings once a month with the customers I am in charge of to check the usage status of the system and explain any additions or changes to the system's functions.

I am also in charge of responding to inquiries from customers who are using our products, and I follow up with customers who have problems with the system or do not understand how to use the system.

I also make proposals for systems that customers have not yet adopted. HUE has several systems, including financial accounting, management accounting, and expense reimbursement systems, and the number of systems to be implemented varies depending on the customer. I sometimes discover new issues through regular conversations with customers, and I make proposals to introduce systems that meet their needs. My previous job was in sales, so I want to use my experience to contribute to sales as well!

I've talked a lot about hard things, but I also have conversations about my personal life with customers with whom I have become good friends, and I enjoy working with them (laughs).

I enjoy working with clients who I get along with well and having conversations about my personal life.

Are there any jobs that have left a lasting impression on you?

The first implementation project I was in charge of left a strong impression on me. I was in charge of a major company with multiple offices, and each office had different requirements for what they wanted to achieve with the system, so we had a lot of trouble reconciling the requirements.
After many meetings with the client, I came to realize that "what this office and that office want may seem different, but in fact they are the same," and "the requirements of this office are beneficial to all offices," and I was able to proceed with the project.

It was very hard work, but after the introduction of the system, we were pleased to hear from our clients, "We were able to improve our business efficiency! I felt a sense of accomplishment when the project was over because of all the hard work we had done.

Like T.N., I was also impressed by the first project I was in charge of introducing a client's system. The first project I was involved in was a bit unique, as there were no precedents or knowledge within the company.
In addition, it was the first time for me to lead a meeting with a client, and I was frustrated at first because I could not lead the project as I wanted to.
I often consulted with my seniors at pubs after work (laughs).

However, thinking positively about the fact that there was no precedent, I began to think that I could create a new case study within the company by myself and that it would be a good opportunity to grow by taking on a challenging project with a high degree of difficulty.
Therefore, I conducted thorough interviews with the customer, organized the requirements from the opinions and suggestions that came up, and proceeded with the implementation of the system.
We managed to complete the project, and the customer said, "I am very happy that we were able to introduce a good product. Thank you very much." I was very happy to hear that.

I was also involved in a system failure that occurred shortly after I joined the company. I remember that it was very difficult because I was still catching up on my IT knowledge right after joining the company.

To be honest, there were times when I did not understand the IT terms that appeared in conversations with customers at first, and I had to look them up myself or ask questions to my seniors to understand what they meant.
Then, when I told the internal development team about the details of the problem that the customer had told me about, and if there were technical terms in the explanation that came back, I had to check the meaning again and make sure I understood it properly before telling the customer.

It was a lot of work, but by taking ownership of the project, I was able to acquire practical IT knowledge and feel a sense of growth.

Please tell us about your team structure and atmosphere.

T.N. and I are both in the same department as implementation consultants, but we belong to three different teams. However, implementation consultants often work on a project basis, so we often work with employees from different groups and have opportunities to communicate with a variety of people.

The overall team has a good atmosphere with flat relationships, and the managers of each group have regular 1-on-1s with the members to check on the status of their work and follow up with them.
The members are warm and friendly and very easy to work with.

I belong to the maintenance consultant department.
Within my team, we have different customers that I am in charge of, so my work is basically done by myself.
However, we have team meetings every day, and I have time to discuss my work problems with my team, so I don't have any major problems. If any problems arise, everyone follows up with each other, so I think the team atmosphere is very good.

Our "Will

Do you have any future work goals or challenges?

In the short term, as a project manager, I would like to improve my expertise so that I can make better proposals that will please our clients.

In the mid- to long-term, I would like to focus on training members to increase the number of consultants who can implement the fixed asset management system I am in charge of. I think it is a very good system, and I would like to spread it around the world to help companies improve their operational efficiency.

I would like to acquire more product knowledge and broaden the scope of my proposals so that more customers will be pleased with the introduction of HUE.

Also, since I have been entrusted as a team leader, I would like to help the team members like my seniors who gave me advice.
I would like to do my best in managing members so that I can eventually become a manager, although I sometimes find it difficult to do so because each individual has different concerns and worries.

As a maintenance consultant, I would like to deepen my understanding of customers so that I can respond to inquiries from customers who are using our products.
In addition, I would like to acquire product knowledge so that I can make more proposals for system implementation that will help customers improve their business efficiency and contribute to the company's sales!

I have been the most junior member of the team so far, and managers and members have often followed me around, but now that a new member of the same team has joined the Kumamoto office, I want to be able to lead the junior members of the team like the senior members who helped me.

We are waiting for colleagues who can expand "HUE" with us.

Do you have a message for job seekers reading this interview?

There are many attractive employees in our company who can be my goal. I think this is the perfect environment for those who "want to try new and difficult things.

I was attracted to the company because I found it to be a stimulating environment, and the employees who spoke on the stage were full of energy.

If you are at all interested in working surrounded by such employees, please apply.

At our company, we are entrusted with highly challenging work from a young age, so I think you will often feel a sense of growth every day.
Regardless of age, even young people can work as a core member of a project.
That does not mean that they are left to their own devices by their seniors, but they are followed up on their work, and we have a manager who is very considerate of our members, so we have a working environment where you can work with peace of mind.
If you are interested, please actively apply!

I joined the company with no experience in the IT industry, but I have been able to continue working successfully (laughs).
In principle, our company is a teleworking company, but my team has daily meetings, and the manager follows up with the members, so I feel that it is a comfortable place to work.

I think people with no experience in the IT industry may feel particularly uneasy, but if you are at all interested, I would like you to apply first and communicate directly with our employees to get a feel for the atmosphere!

Pick up! ★

On maintaining motivation and communication/relationship building in a teleworker-oriented work style

Since last year, as a company-wide initiative, workshops have been held to mutually share "personal values". The content of the workshop was to organize one's own values, mission, and vision, consider how they overlap with the company's mission, and then share them with other employees.

I have not had many opportunities to think deeply about "my values," so I think this was a very meaningful time for me.

Also, I usually work as a teleworker, and compared to when I worked face-to-face, I had fewer opportunities to learn what other people were thinking about in their work, so it was a good stimulus for me.

I try to bring meaning to my work and enjoy my job as much as possible.
I believe that sometimes we lose sight of the purpose of our work when we have been doing the same job for a long time, but through the workshop I was able to take a fresh look at what I value in my work.

As a result, I think it was a good workshop because it led to my motivation for work.

During the workshop, there was time to think about the overlap between the company's mission and my own values, and I was able to make a proper connection between the two. I felt that my values matched those of the company, which is why I joined the company and why I am still able to work with the same motivation.

Since I have been working as a teleworker since I joined the company, I was able to have face-to-face conversations with various people and learn about other people's ideas and values, so I think it was a very good opportunity in terms of communication.

*There are some positions that do not allow telework due to the nature of the work.
