The Key to Success in Fully Teleworking Internships is "Detailed Communication
2021/03/09
(Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Naoki Inoue; "Works") has announced the results of a questionnaire survey conducted by Works Applications, Inc. The results of a questionnaire survey are now available. The participating students highly recommended this internship (94%), and the success factor was found to be communication.
Background of the Telework Internship
Due to the impact of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), many internships and joint information sessions have been cancelled. At WORKS, security, communication, and other issues were resolved immediately after the declaration of the state of emergency, and 98% of employees are now working via telework. In the midst of practicing "new ways of working" in the new normal era, we held the "Complete Teleworking Internship" with the aim of contributing to the recovery of the Japanese economy by providing university and graduate students living in various regions of Japan with opportunities for real work experience at IT companies using our teleworking environment. The internship was completed and the results of a questionnaire survey were as follows.
90% of the students found the work "difficult," but 94.4% recommended it
In a post-internship questionnaire, 90% of students responded to the question, "How difficult did you find the work? 90% of the students answered "difficult. On the other hand, to the question about communication, they answered "very good" and "I got enough support. Although it was a long-term internship in which students were challenged with highly difficult tasks, the question "Would you recommend this internship to a junior colleague or acquaintance? 94.4% of the students answered "Yes, I would recommend it," indicating a very high level of satisfaction.
The key to success is "detailed communication
This internship, with the solid support of the mentors, was able to provide students with a realistic work experience with an awareness of the PDCA cycle in an IT company. As mentioned above, in the survey results, almost all students raised communication-related issues as good points. In particular, the high evaluation of (1) online 1-on-1 meetings (one-on-one meetings between supervisors and subordinates on a regular basis), (2) frequent use of online meetings when it is difficult to communicate in writing, and (3) chatting with the mentors outside of work, all indicated that the program was a good opportunity for the students to actively increase "communication" opportunities with their mentors while challenging them with highly difficult tasks. This indicates that the positive increase in opportunities for communication with the mentors as the employees took on more challenging tasks led to the 94.4% "Recommendation" rating. In addition, by properly paying the salary for the work they performed, we were able to support students whose part-time income has been reduced due to the impact of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
What was good about communicating with the mentors
- When it was difficult to communicate in writing, the mentor frequently explained things to me through direct online conversations.
- They prepared materials that were easy to understand.
- Quick responses to my questions
- Daily meetings with me at set times
- Explained everything in detail until I was satisfied.
- Gave me hints on how to think
- Pointed out viewpoints that I was missing
Comments from students who participated in the internship
I was able to be involved in more actual work than I had imagined and experience real development, not make-believe. I believe that this was an experience that I could never have had through school research or a regular internship. In addition, the mentors and management were very supportive and easy to ask questions, which was especially helpful in the early stages of the internship. I also appreciated the fact that they gave me more opportunities to think for myself as I got used to the program.

Future Prospects
By holding a working internship through complete teleworking without ever coming to the office, including the procedures and orientation associated with the start of the internship, we were able to offer work experience opportunities to students in rural areas, regardless of their place of residence. In the future, we will consider offering work-based internships not only for development positions, but also for sales and consulting positions as well.
We will continue to provide a variety of opportunities based on our corporate philosophy of "providing opportunities for critical workers" while responding flexibly to changes in social conditions.
