For this issue, we interviewed a manager of the Development Department and a consultant of the Customer Success Department under the theme of "Female Employees Active in the Works Applications Group.
A challenging job. Each person takes responsibility for their work.
Please tell us about the work you two usually do and what attracts you to it.
I belong to the development department and am the license owner (responsible for development) of the fixed asset management system for ERP "HUE. In the development department, I watch daily inquiries from customers and industry trends, visit customers' sites to hear about their current business issues, and plan what functions to add to the product in the future, considering the ideal image of the product, which is then reflected in the actual product.
I am mainly responsible for planning the overall roadmap for the entire fixed asset management system, making overall plans, and checking the progress.
The Works Applications Group has an integrated development system from planning to development, and I am attracted to the fact that we can design and develop the future direction of the product as a team.
As a consultant, I am mainly responsible for the maintenance of the ArielAirOne groupware. My job has two main components. The first is to provide support for customers who have questions or problems using the product, such as introducing product functions.
The second is to help customers improve their business by using groupware functions.
Most recently, in order to promote the use of our products by customers who have overseas offices, we modified the applications in the groupware while listening to the customers' usage status in order to provide multilingual support. By proposing improvements, including issues that the customer was not aware of, I was able to contribute to the customer and make them very happy, which is what I find attractive about this job.
Deepen understanding of members and manage by making the most of their individuality.
This question is for S.H., who is currently a manager. When were you promoted to manager? Also, please tell us about your current role.
In 2015, my fourth year with the company, I became the manager of a small team of eight members.
I had been in the role of sub-leader since my second year and had experience in project management and overall supervision. Therefore, I was not too worried when I was selected as a manager.
I currently manage about 17 people, but I once managed a maximum of 30 people.
What were some of the challenges you faced after becoming a manager?
When I first became a manager, I was not very good at managing people. Although each member had his or her own personality, I assigned tasks without being aware of each person's strengths and weaknesses, and at times I treated members harshly. I was managing tasks rather than managing people.
There was an opportunity to change my way of thinking, and that was when I became an instructor for a long-term internship program for students. My mission was to train about 20 students in thinking skills. I had to ask the students, who had no business experience, to come up with their own solutions to the problems faced by the company, but "teaching them how to think" was extremely challenging. I had to think a lot about how to teach the process to students who had no idea of the right or left side of the business.
I was in charge of teaching the internship program for a full month, and it was during this time that I realized the importance of deepening understanding of each individual and the importance of human resource management.
I think this experience is still alive in my current management.
Started with no IT experience. Steadily gaining experience as a second year new graduate.
Question for Y.Y., who has been with the company for two years. You were assigned to your current department as a new graduate. How is the education and follow-up system for new graduate employees?
My seniors have been very supportive.
I joined the Works Applications Group from a liberal arts background and had nothing to do with IT.
After the training for new employees, I was assigned to my current department, and even though I don't know what's right or left, I am able to perform my duties successfully through on-the-job training.
I am in charge of products that have a very wide range of functions and areas, so I still lack expertise in many things that I don't understand, but senior employees are very attentive and teach me what they know, making my work environment very easy.
I also feel that the team makes it easy for me to balance work and private life.
My hobby is watching F1, and I once went to watch it for a week in a row with pay.
I consulted with them in advance about work adjustments, and they were willing to accommodate me. I think the environment is extremely easy to work in, and new employees are easily nurtured.
What are some of the good things about your job and what have you experienced as a sense of accomplishment?
I was originally entrusted with a client that the head of the department was in charge of, and I was worried because of the difference in skill sets, but I gradually input specific product functions and technical knowledge and became able to make proposals in line with the client's issues. I feel it is very rewarding to receive more and more appointments from executives and to be told, "I trust what you say.
However, I would like to continue to provide value to our customers and work hard to make them happy, even if it is a small thing.
I would like to continue to deepen my product knowledge and customer understanding, and become a consultant who can better respond and make proposals.

What is the true "work comfort" for women?
There are many female employees in the Works Applications Group. Is it a company where female employees can play an active role?
I had never thought about whether gender had an impact on workability until you asked me this question (laughs).
In other words, I think this is a company where there is no difference between men and women.
I have never heard of anything like not giving a woman a promotion or advancement because she is a woman.
In the past, there may have been stereotypes about women going into the home after marriage, etc., but I don't think there are people in the Works Applications Group who think that way, and the company culture has never made me aware of gender differences.
I have never been conscious of gender differences since I joined the company.
There are female managers in the same department, and of course there is no difference in treatment, so I never think that I am disadvantaged because I am a woman.
Although there are many men in the team, I feel that there is no difference in communication as well as work.
What is the workplace atmosphere like?
There is an atmosphere in which each person has discretion and can work freely. In the development department, there are opportunities to take on the challenge of designing system functions. Of course, if there is something I don't understand, there is someone who will follow up with me, so I feel a sense of security. Before I joined the company, I had the impression that the company was an individual player, but once I joined, I found that there were many cooperative people, and I felt a gap in a good way.
Also, as part of the company culture, there is an ingrained culture of clarifying the purpose and reason for doing something.
For this reason, when working on something, I often hear my supervisor say, "If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I try to treat my team members in this way.
I am in charge of about 10 clients, and as the consultant in charge, I am in charge of making decisions in various situations.
There are still times when I cannot make decisions on my own, but my supervisor and senior employees follow up on those occasions, which is very helpful.
Also, regardless of position, even newcomers are encouraged to make suggestions for improvement, and I have never felt an atmosphere of "the one who stands out gets hammered".
Generally speaking, it is said that women have a hard time being motivated for promotion. What do you think women should do to achieve the career they desire?
Rather than there being a difference in the motivation for promotion between men and women, I think that as the age of employees increases, women often prioritize their families due to life events such as childbirth or nursing care, and their motivation for promotion is reduced.
At Works Applications Group, there are people who leave work to pick up their children from daycare, or leave early when responding to nursing care or other emergencies, and the "WAP FAMO Support" system allows for flexibility in private life, regardless of gender, so I think such an environment will help women feel more secure. I think women can feel secure in such an environment.
Please click here for details of "WAP FAMO Support.
As S.H. said, women are prioritizing family more and more, and I feel that this is the reason why they lose their motivation for promotion or have to give up. However, I don't feel that there are people in the company who are giving up their careers because of life events. I see many people who are successfully balancing their personal and professional lives.
Even if they take time off due to family illness, the people around them will follow up with them, and in my division, a male division head has also taken maternity leave, so I think it is easier for those around me to take advantage of such systems.
Before I joined the company, I had the impression that it was a dry company, but once I got inside, I found it to be very warm.
I think this kind of atmosphere makes it easier for women to face their careers.

In an environment that values diversity, we are waiting for colleagues who are willing to take on the challenge of solving problems together.
Do you have a message for job seekers reading this interview?
The Works Applications Group is a company that values diversity, not to mention that there is no difference between men and women, and I myself would like people with various backgrounds to join the company.
If you think about things from different perspectives, it will be easier to solve problems, so I would like you to help us. We have a culture where individuality is not squashed and individual feelings are taken into consideration.
Please apply proactively!
I feel that there is a big difference between the information you can get from the Internet and the atmosphere of the company you actually feel at Works Applications Group.
At the beginning of my job hunting activities, I myself had the impression of a cold company based solely on the information I found on the Internet (laugh). However, when I actually went to the information session, I found that the employees were warm, and after I actually joined the company, various people helped me with any problems I had with my work.
If you are not sure whether you want to be selected or not, I would like you to apply first, communicate directly with employees, and feel the atmosphere!
Pick up! ★
Is the work environment conducive to valuing both personal and professional life?
One of my favorite points at Works Applications Group is the flexibility in working hours and location.
I am a big fan of a certain artist and travel all over the country to go to live shows, but I often take advantage of the remote work system and work from my parents' home or hotel.
Depending on the time of the live concert, I am sometimes allowed to adjust my work hours by utilizing the full-flex system. Of course, I think it is necessary to produce results as a prerequisite, but I think the environment is one in which it is easy to make time for one's private life.
In terms of work, we have a culture where each and every employee can work with a sense of satisfaction.
The monthly company-wide engagement survey "Wappo! and once a half year, the management team explains the company's policies to us in detail.
I am making the most of my current environment to balance work and private life, and I often feel that it would be impossible for me to work anywhere but at Works Applications Group from now on (laugh).
(Laughs) I am encouraged to take paid vacations, and I am able to take time off for my hobbies, so I am able to have a balanced work style.
If all I did was work, stress would build up, but since the company respects what I want to do, I rarely lose motivation.
As S.H. mentioned, we have a culture of clarifying the purpose and reason for doing things, and if there are any questions about work content or policies, my seniors and superiors explain them clearly, so I rarely work with a sense of dissatisfaction.
*There are some positions that do not allow telework due to the nature of the work.
